Understanding The Long Tail Search When It Comes To SEO

When it comes to websites getting ranked highly among the search engines, SEO (search engine optimisation) is very important. One topic that commonly comes up in relation to SEO is the ‘long term search’. In fact it is an important idea to understand if you want to get the best from SEO.

The Long Tail Search explained?

The term ‘long tail search’ entered the SEO after it was mentioned in a  Wired  article by Chris Anderson. However this article about the long tail search was not referring to SEO but instead to the fact that online stores such as Amazon can make a lot of money from selling items which are not deemed to be ‘best sellers’. The words ‘long tail’ comes from the shape of a graph which is used to demonstrate how things are sold online. The peak of the graph covers the best sellers but after this peak the graph falls into a long tail. All the less popular items can be found in this long tail. What Anderson was trying to point out was that the majority of sales are along the tail and not at the peak of the graph. This means that a business like Amazon can make more money on their sales of the less popular items when compared to the popular items.

The long tail search has been used in relation to SEO and the way that some people behave while surfing the internet. When it comes to most items there will be some popular keywords that are frequently used. But just like Amazon sales most of the keywords used are not the most popular but those in the long tail. So for those wanting to make sure that their website is as SEO friendly as it can be, they will have to also take into account the less popular keywords. For instance if you had a website that sold women’s handbags, it would be worthwhile to pay attention to more than just the keyword ‘women’s handbags’.
